Understanding GSM in Canvas Art

Understanding GSM in Canvas Art

If you've ever shopped for canvas prints or fine art, you may have come across the term GSM. It might sound technical, but understanding what GSM means can make a big difference in how you choose art that not only looks good but lasts for years.

At Canvasquared, we believe that quality starts with materials—and that’s why we use 340 GSM canvas for all our prints. But what does that number really mean?

What is GSM, Exactly?

GSM stands for grams per square meter, and it’s the standard way to measure the weight and thickness of paper, fabric, and canvas. The higher the GSM, the thicker, denser, and more durable the material. For canvas, this directly impacts print quality, texture, and overall feel.

🧠 What about U.S. measurements?
While GSM is used internationally — including in the U.S. art and textile industries — some American systems measure fabrics in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²). It’s important not to confuse this with the “pound” system used for paper, which isn’t applicable to canvas.

For reference:

  • 340 GSM equals about 10 to 12 oz/yd², depending on weave and coating.

  • That’s considered a heavyweight, professional-grade canvas, perfect for vibrant prints, strong texture, and long-term durability.

Stick with GSM when comparing canvases — it’s the most consistent and reliable standard globally, and the one professionals trust.

GSM in Everyday Use: A Quick Comparison

To better understand what GSM feels like, let’s look at some everyday materials:

Material Typical GSM Common Use
Printer Paper 70–90 GSM Everyday printing, copy paper
Magazine Paper 90–130 GSM Glossy pages, lightweight yet durable
Poster Paper 150–200 GSM Medium-weight, good for wall posters
Art Prints 200–300 GSM High-quality fine art prints
Canvasquared Canvas 340 GSM Premium, professional-grade canvas

So, while 200–300 GSM might be great for art prints on paper, a canvas—which is thicker and textured—needs more density to offer the same level of durability and print quality.

Why 340 GSM Makes a Difference

We use 340 GSM canvas for all our framed artworks because it strikes the perfect balance between weight, texture, and longevity.

Here’s why that matters:

  • Stronger Structure: Lower GSM canvases (under 300) may sag, warp, or feel too soft over time. Our canvas holds its shape.

  • Better Ink Absorption: Heavier canvas allows for deeper color saturation and crisp image details.

  • Gallery-Level Finish: The canvas feels professional—thick, textured, and satisfying to the touch.

This weight is commonly used in museum-quality canvas prints, designed for both beauty and endurance.

Why Not Thicker? Why Not Thinner?

You might ask—why not go even higher, like 400 GSM? Or why not save costs and go thinner?

  • Over 400 GSM can become too stiff, difficult to stretch over frames, and more costly without offering a noticeably better viewing experience.

  • Under 300 GSM might look okay at first, but it's more prone to wear, sagging, and faded prints with time.

340 GSM is the sweet spot. It’s trusted by professional printers, artists, and gallerists for a reason—and it’s what we use at Canvasquared to ensure every piece is worthy of your wall, shelf, or gift box.

The Canvasquared Standard

At Canvasquared, you get thick, 340 GSM canvas:

  • Feels substantial and premium right out of the box

  • Offers rich color depth and detail thanks to its print-ready texture

  • Stands up to time, light, and humidity far better than thin or low-grade alternatives

Whether you’re decorating your home, adding a touch of art to your workspace, or looking for the perfect thoughtful gift, our canvas gives you peace of mind—and something beautiful to look at every day.
